Business Ethics 101

jiveny | October 31, 2010

Like anybody, I hate feeling ripped off.

As a consumer, a client, the person who invests in your business and with the power to recommend or discredit your services I have two quick suggestions for those running a service orientated business.

First of all, don’t come on too strong. Finding and keeping customers is like dating, you need to play a little hard to get in the beginning if you want people to come back for more. Telling people that they NEED to come back again for X more sessions is totally overwhelming and transparent. I much prefer the sage who smiles sweetly as you leave, knowing that you may or may not come back again, and accepting what will be will be. Doing the best service possible will increase the chances of a return visit, while trying to get a client to commit early on is probably going to make them think twice.

Secondly, be open, honest and up front about your pricing. There is nothing that I hate more than being charged more than I expected to pay without an upfront explanation. Even more so, I despise it when practitioners offer to do a little something extra for you, making it out to be a gift, and then charge you for it later. However, I often have no problem paying the price if they are clear about it from the beginning.

Sure, one could say “it’s up to the client to check”. But, essentially we come to you so that we can relax a little and hand over the reins. We don’t want to be on guard, questioning awkwardly. If you want us to come again, it is in your best interests that you provide us with a stress-free, pleasurable experience. And honesty will get you bonus points.

$$$

jiveny | October 25, 2010

I read an interesting thing the other day in an article by a yogi, about money, but his advice can indeed be applied to almost anything…

He spoke of how, most of us tend to lock up the things that we “value”, saving them for that “special occasion”. And yet, like many things, money doesn’t like to be possessed. It wants to flow freely. It wants you to treat it with trust and respect; let come and let go. He then goes on to say that when you lock money up and then finally let it go, it remembers not to come back to you. After all, you’re no fun, you kept it in a cage!

As the Tao says: Have things, but don’t posses them.

EXPAND

jiveny | October 12, 2010

Expand. That is the word that has been haunting my mind these past few weeks, reminding me to stay conscious in my interactions with others – especially when they test my limits.

This simple word forces me to recognise the truth in that I always have two choices – to expand or contract. Recognizing this, I am enjoying the opportunities life is presenting me with to expand and become a bigger and better person. Disappointment, frustration, sadness and dislike are all beautiful opportunities to experience this and with the concept of expansion in mind I welcome them.

A few days ago I wasn’t in the best of moods and was choosing to be frustrated by things far too easily. Blinded by this, I said something a little out of line to a friend. He replied painfully simply “I deserve to be treated better than this.”

I instantly felt shame crawling down the back of my neck and distracted myself for a moment by looking the other way and questioning morality… I was choosing to feel bad for my actions. Why?

Because morality  is how we define and uphold our values. I allowed myself to feel guilty for this because I value making others feel good and reminding them of who they are. In this instance however I had made another feel small. At his words reminding me of my mistake I was faced with only expansion or withdrawal.

In the end I chose to expand, inspired by his simple reminder that cruel is not who I am.
